Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you order.
What is an instantEDP?
It's a translation of your driver's license into the languages used abroad, so rental desks and local officials can read your details. You carry it alongside your real license.
Is this an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
No. An IDP is an official document. It can only be issued by authorized bodies in the country that issued your license, such as AAA in the US or the Post Office in the UK. instantEDP is a private translation service. Some countries legally require an official IDP, so check the rules for where you're going.
How fast will I get it?
Most orders are delivered within 30 minutes, straight to your inbox.
How much does it cost?
$19.99, one-time. No subscription.
What do I need to order?
A valid, unexpired driver's license and a few minutes. You must be 18 or older.
Will a rental company or police officer accept it?
Acceptance is always up to the rental company or local authority, so we can't guarantee it. A clear translation helps people read your license when it isn't in their language. Check your destination's rules before you travel.
Which countries need an IDP instead?
Several popular destinations require an official IDP for many visitors: Italy, Spain, Greece and Austria for licenses from outside the EU, and Japan, Thailand and South Korea for most foreign licenses. See our country guides for each destination.
When is a translation useful?
When your license isn't in the local language and an IDP isn't legally required, for example in Mexico, Costa Rica, France or Germany. It helps rental staff and police read your name, license number, categories and expiry date.
Do I still need my own license?
Yes. A translation only works together with your valid driver's license. Always carry both, plus your passport.
Can I use it to drive in the US?
No. It's for travel abroad. In the US, your state driver's license is what you need.
How do I receive it?
By email, as a digital document. Save it to your phone or print it before you travel.
