Do I need an International Driving Permit in Australia?
For visitors on a short trip. The rules depend on where your license was issued. Last reviewed November 3, 2026.
Short answer: Not if your license is in English. Visitors can drive in Australia on a valid foreign license. If your license isn't in English, you must also carry an International Driving Permit or an English translation, and most states want that translation from an accredited (NAATI) translator. Check the rules for the state you're visiting.
